Original, moody, melodic, spine-quivering strings – if previous ballads in their career seemed more like exercises in ‘sad song’ box-ticking, this feels like a profound musical evolution.Įlsewhere, pensive, essentially upbeat tunes like Too High (inspired, appropriately enough, by Starr’s old housemate who cooked methamphetamine in their basement) demonstrate the swingy, feelgood soul of their previous albums, with added adult textures. This time, however, we get the likes of Woman In The Moon, which hits an entirely new level of ‘rock’n’roll slowie’. Prayer For The Little Man, Sure Was Good… all lovely stuff. Not that Blackberry Smoke haven’t trodden slow ’n’ meaningful waters before. Where previously our neck hair has tingled at the sound of upbeat hits (as on Shakin’ Hands With The Holy Ghost), often it’s the slow numbers that create a magical effect here.

An exhilarating rush of hand claps, keys and a propulsive acoustic hook which swirl into distorted crunch, racing violin lines and a triumphant electric flourish. It improves with listens, but the title track here is probably one of the best things the Smoke have ever done. Worried that’s as good as it gets? Step up track two. If you’re already in a good mood, you’ll be bloody flying by the end.

If you’re feeling low, it’ll restore your spirits. Let Me Help You (Find The Door) is stupidly addictive, in all its swinging, southern roll style. Getting past the first track proved challenging at first, in so far as I couldn’t stop playing it.
